Information:
The Ku-ring-gai & District Football Referees Association (KDFRA) conducts Referee training courses in accordance with the national program set out by FFA and the Australian Sports Commission. Our coaches, who are themselves experienced senior referees and FFA Instructors, will teach you the Laws of the Game, and how to apply them in practice, in lecture-style sessions supported by audio/visual material, in indoor and outdoor venues.
The referee qualification is a two-part process.
Laws of the Game Certificate course: Theory Course (February/March each year)
The Laws of the Game (LOTG) theory course is conducted over 8 hours in lecture-style sessions and includes an examination. This course is run at an indoor venue (Lindfield) over four evenings within one fortnight (2 evenings per week for 2 consecutive weeks), with the FFA exam being taken in the 4th session. This exam must be passed before you can attend the FFA Level 4 (Junior Referee) course (below). All course materials are provided, and you must be able to complete some self-study in between the sessions.
FFA Level 4 (Junior Referee) course: Practical Course (February/March each year)
The practical course is conducted over a full day (8am til 3pm) on the Sunday immediately following the end of your theory course, at a mixed indoor/outdoor venue at Northbridge. This course takes you through the practicalities of being a referee, including appointments, equipment, grounds, pre-match management, refereeing the match, managing players, dealing with incidents, identifying fouls, positioning, signalling, post-match management, preparation for the next match, KDFRA business management, and a host of other aspects. Once you pass this practical course you will be a qualified FFA Level 4 Junior Referee, and can join KDFRA and be appointed as a match official in our district.
NOTES: (at 3 Jan 2012): The Cadet Scheme for young people under 14 is now full for 2012 courses. Therefore, you MUST be 14 by 1 April 2012 if you wish to attend a new-entry refereeing course ready for this 2012 season.
COMMITMENT TO REGULAR TRAINING AFTER YOU QUALIFY AS A REFEREE::
In the same way that players in a football team are required to train, so Referees are also required to train. If you become a member of our Association, you will need to attend our monthly coaching meetings in order to maintain your qualification. These meeting are on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Adults meet from 7.20pm until 9.00pm at Lindfield Sports Club. Members aged 14-17 have their own Youth squad coaching meeting from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on the same evening also at Lindfield, and stay on for the adult meeting if possible. (This allows for Cadet and younger Youth members, who should attend for the Cadet/Youth coaching session, but may have to leave at 7.30pm). Regardless of age, if you do not attend these monthly coaching meetings, your qualification will not be renewed at the next re-accreditation point. This is a national requirement of FFA and applies to all referees in Australia.
Additionally, we train once a week in the evenings, to provide fitness, agility, and refereeing skills. It is highly desirable that you plan, as part of your wish to take up refereeing, to attend weekly training which is held from 7.30pm to 9.00pm one evening a week normally at Bannockburn Oval under floodlights. It is recognised that referees who also play may already have team training commitments, and if this is keeping them fit enough to referee, then we understand that an additional evening may not be possible. Apart from those who are in this situation, other members should attend weekly training, as it offers both a physical workout and refereeing skills development.
IF YOU UNDERSTAND ALL OF THE ABOVE, AND ACCEPT THE EXPECTATIONS THAT COME WITH REFEREEING, THEN PLEASE PROCEED TO THE COURSE DATES INFORMATION BELOW, and then to registration. If you have any questions, please ask me via this email address: coach@kdfra.asn.au
We look forward to welcoming you into the ranks of football refereeing in Australia and the Ku Ring-gai district.
